Help! How long before an empolyer can ask for a sick note?
Essentially it depends on your company's policy but the minimum is a week.

From NHS web site.......

2nd paragraph is the clincher.......

Whether or not you need a sickness certificate from your doctor depends on your company policy. This should tell you how long you are able to be off sick for before you need a doctor's note. For more information ask your supervisor or speak to someone from Human Resources.

Employers cannot ask for a doctor's certificate for the first seven days of a spell of sickness though they can ask you to notify them on your first day of absence.

When you return to work after being ill, you usually have to fill in a form saying how long you were off sick for and why. This is called a self-certification or SC2 form. If your place of work does not have any of these forms, you may be able to get one from your GP surgery or from your nearest Revenue and Customs (Tax) office. You can also download a form from the Revenue and Customs website (see the 'further information' section).

If you are off sick for more than a certain length of time (usually seven days), you will need to get a sick note from your GP.

To get a sick note you will have to make an appointment with your GP. In some cases you may have to pay for the certificate. Your GP practice will be able to advise you of their charges.
Reply:Your employer can ask for a "sick note" whenever they want. If you mean "Doctor's Note" they they can require you to get one if they want it. If you work for a large company check your employee manual. Small companies usually don't have one. If they have it in the manual that they can ask for a sick note after X# of days then you will know the answer.

Small companies don't ask for a note unless they think you are abusing their good nature, and want a reason to fire you.

Don't be reluctant because of anything you are afraid the army is going to be concerned about, they will send you for a physical exam and if you pass they will not care about your having been sick 3 or 4 days. They might be concerned if you have your employer down as a reference and they call and find out you were off "sick" lots of the time, because it will look like you use sick time off to get time from work when you are not sick. If you are really sick a lot, they will find out in the physical exam, and not accept you.

Good Luck
Reply:There is no law on this. This would be whatever the company policy is. It is normally three days and then a note might be required to return to work and/or excuse the absences. Without providing it, your company can most likely:

1. Not allow you to return to work until you provide it

2. Administer disciplinary action

3. Terminate your employment for cause (in which you will not qualify for unemployment benefits)
Reply:If you are in the UK then you can self-certificate for the first 5 working days. If you are absent with something that is gone within this time then it really won't worry the army. If you are going to be off work for longer then surely you have been to your Dr anyway which means the army will probably find out through your medical records. No sense upsetting your current employer over something and nothing.

An employer of mine once asked for a sick note from the first day of absense. My GP refused to give me one because I only needed to be off for 5 days and could self-certificate.
Reply:you have seven days under statute law. thereafter you must produce a sick note. The employer has to know who he can rely on so he may want you to get a sick note. He may think if you are genuine you dont have a problem with getting one. I would see my doctor in any case just to show i am not skiving. The fact you are joining the Army is not in the knowledge of your current employer is it.?

Any body can get gastric sickness. at least the army will see you are genuine. any way they need recruits so a bit of sick time wont bar you from joining.
Reply:I feel sorry for your boss. If you are going into the army then why not just do it and don't sit around taking money for being "sick" like 90% of the "sickies" do in the UK when there is nothing wrong with them except laziness.

Sorry you were truly ill - it's rare in the UK so I guess you are an American.
Reply:get a fake sick note from http://www.doctorsnotestore.com - they sell sick certs that are identical to those given out by private or NHS doctors in the UK, I used them before. Some websites in the USA sell dowloadable printable ones, in my experience these are not good enough for the UK
Reply:5 working days is self certification, over that you will need a sick note from your GP
Reply:7 days before you need a sick note, self-cert for this length of time. Good luck in the army!!!
Reply:In the US, he can ask on day one. Being ill won't keep you from the army

Self certificate? right.
Reply:There's not statute - they could ask for one for every absence.
Reply:A self cert covers you for 7 days.

The Army won't refuse you for throwing a sickie!

Reply:Not more than two days on avg. but being sick won't keep you from joining the army. As long as that's the only problem.
